About this service

Post-surgery rehabilitation

The first weeks after an operation can be the hardest time to travel to appointments, yet it's when guidance and encouragement matter most. Post-surgery home physiotherapy supports your recovery after joint replacement, fracture fixation, spinal surgery or soft-tissue repair, with sessions in your own home across Glasgow's West End.

Nasir follows the instructions from your surgical team — weight-bearing limits, movement precautions and any brace or sling routine — and builds a personalised programme around them. Practising on your own stairs, in your own bathroom and getting in and out of your own bed or car makes it easier to use what you learn straight away.

What's included in every visit

  • Hip & knee replacement rehab (THR / TKR)
  • Fracture rehab (NOF, wrist, ankle, spine)
  • Early-stage respiratory + mobilisation post-abdominal/cardiac surgery

Who this helps

  • People home after a hip or knee replacement
  • Older adults recovering from surgery for a hip fracture
  • Anyone who has had a wrist, ankle or other fracture fixed surgically
  • People recovering from spinal surgery, such as a decompression or discectomy
  • Those rehabilitating after shoulder surgery or a tendon or ligament repair
  • People rebuilding mobility after abdominal or heart surgery, alongside any NHS cardiac rehabilitation

What happens on a visit

  1. 1

    Reviewing your operation and protocol

We go through your discharge letter, your surgeon's protocol, pain levels and any precautions, and ask how your wound and swelling are settling.

  2. 2

    Restoring movement and strength

Exercises target range of movement, strength and control around the operated area and the rest of the body, progressing in line with your protocol and how you respond.

  3. 3

    Practising everyday tasks

We work on walking with the right aid, stairs, getting in and out of bed, a chair and the bath or shower, and then on returning to the activities you enjoy.

  4. 4

    Progressing safely

Your programme is updated at each visit. If something doesn't seem right, we'll advise you to contact your surgical team or GP promptly.

Questions about post-surgery rehabilitation

How soon after surgery can home physiotherapy start?

That depends on your operation and your surgeon's instructions. Many people start once they are home from hospital. If you're unsure, check with your surgical team and have your discharge information ready for the first visit.

Will this replace my NHS physiotherapy?

It doesn't have to. Some people have home sessions alongside NHS follow-up; others want more frequent support. Either way, Nasir works within your consultant's protocol.

What warning signs should I look out for?

Call 999 if you have chest pain or sudden breathlessness. Contact your surgical team, GP or NHS 24 on 111 promptly for a hot, swollen or painful calf, increasing redness or discharge from the wound, a fever, or pain that suddenly gets much worse.

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. If you have sudden or severe symptoms, call NHS 24 on 111, or 999 in an emergency. More answers on our FAQ page.
