Home visits in Kelvindale

What a home visit in Kelvindale typically looks like.

Kelvindale is a quiet, mainly residential pocket north of Kelvinside and east of Anniesland, with the River Kelvin and Dawsholm Park close by. Much of it was built between the wars, so it feels quite different from the tenement streets further into the West End.

Homes in Kelvindale

Most of Kelvindale's housing dates from the late 1920s and 1930s: semi-detached houses, including villas built by Mactaggart and Mickel, and tenements on streets such as Dorchester Avenue, with newer homes added since. In a two-storey house the bathroom and bedrooms are usually upstairs, so a single staircase can decide whether someone can live normally at home after an operation. We practise that stair, look at the bathroom set-up, check the front and back steps and the garden path, and only recommend rails or equipment where they're really needed.

Getting out and about

Kelvindale has its own station, opened in 2005 on the line between Anniesland and Glasgow Queen Street, and Anniesland station, now step-free with lifts, is a short way west. Buses run along Great Western Road. Dawsholm Park, a local nature reserve, has woodland paths for when walking outdoors is going well, and the Kelvin Walkway follows the river south-east towards the Botanic Gardens.

Working alongside your GP and NHS team

Gartnavel General Hospital is just south on Great Western Road. A large share of hip and knee replacements in the west of Scotland are carried out at the Golden Jubilee hospital in Clydebank, where an enhanced recovery programme means many people are home within a few days of surgery. Home physiotherapy picks up from there: we follow your surgeon's protocol, progress your exercises and keep things moving between NHS appointments.
