About this service

Equipment & home adaptations

The right piece of equipment can make home safer and daily tasks easier; the wrong one can end up in a cupboard or even leave someone less steady. A walking stick set at the wrong height, a frame that won't fit through the bathroom door or a shower stool that's too low are common examples. This service gives you independent, clinically led advice before you buy or borrow anything.

Because Nasir sees you at home, his recommendations are based on the real space — tenement stairs, narrow hallways, the height of your bed and the layout of your bathroom — and on how you actually move. He can check and adjust walking aids on the day and put recommendations in writing for family, carers or an occupational therapist.

What's included in every visit

  • Written recommendations you can show family or OT
  • Fitting and height-setting on the day
  • Signposting to NHS / third-sector routes

Who this helps

  • People who've been given a walking aid and aren't sure it's right for them
  • Anyone struggling to get in and out of the bath or shower, or on and off the toilet
  • People finding it hard to rise from a low chair, sofa or bed
  • Those managing stairs who might benefit from a second handrail
  • Families planning ahead after a hospital discharge or a new diagnosis
  • Carers looking for safer ways to help with transfers

What happens on a visit

  1. 1

    Watching how you move

We look at the tasks you find difficult — standing up, walking, turning, stairs, getting in and out of bed — to understand where support is really needed.

  2. 2

    Looking at the space

Doorway widths, floor surfaces, step heights and room layout all affect what will work. We consider what you already have before suggesting anything new.

  3. 3

    Adjusting and practising

Walking aids can be height-adjusted and practised with on the day, so you are confident using them safely, including on stairs and outdoors where relevant.

  4. 4

    Written recommendations and next steps

You receive written recommendations to share with family or other professionals. Where larger adaptations or funded equipment may be appropriate, we explain how to request an assessment from the local council or NHS occupational therapy service.

Questions about equipment & home adaptations

Should I buy equipment before the visit?

It's usually best to wait. Many items look alike but suit very different needs, and something you already own may work with a small adjustment. If you have already bought something, keep it handy so it can be checked.

Can you fit grab rails or a stairlift?

Nasir advises on what would help and exactly where it should go. Installing rails, stairlifts or larger adaptations is carried out by a fitter or through the council's adaptations route, and your written recommendations can be passed to them.

Does using a walking frame mean I'm going backwards?

Not necessarily. For some people a walking aid is a temporary support during recovery; for others it means walking further and doing more. The aim is the least support that keeps you safe and active, reviewed as things change.
